When you talk about detoxification or detox, you are talking about the process of eliminating toxins from the body.  This is accomplished through urine and stools.

Toxins can include such things as food additives, cigarette smoke, chemicals, and drugs among others.  These poisons enter the body when we inhale or swallow them.

A detox diet sets out to eliminate these toxins and create a healthier you.

But why would anyone try a detox diet?  Well, users report a variety of positive effects including more energy, less constipation, better digestion, clearer skin,  and more mental awareness.  There have also been claims of reduced pain from gout and arthritis and a reduction in allergy and sinus problems.  Also, many users experience a great deal of weight loss during these diets.

People who should avoid a detox diet include pregnant women and children as there will always be a shortage of nutrients on these diets.  In addition, anyone with anemia, diabetes, cancer, and other serious medical conditions should bypass a detoxification program unless recommended by a doctor.

You should expect some side effects from a detox diet, some of which will not be pleasant.   Some of these side effects include headaches, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, irritability, moodiness, acne, weight loss and hunger.

Probably the best example of a detox is the Master Cleanse Diet or the Lemonade Cleansing Diet as it is sometimes called.  This liquid diet was created by Stanley Burroughs, an alternative medicine practitioner in 1941.  He claimed that the diet would promote weight loss while removing toxins while curing ulcers and practically any other ailment.

The diet has been practiced faithfully since it’s inception but has enjoyed increased popularity in the last several years due to the promotion of the diet by several Hollywood celebrities; most notably Beyonce Knowles and Ashton Kutchar.  It is a diet that is made up of drinking a mixture of water, lemonade, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup during the day with no food for a minimum of 10 days.  It is a very tough thing to do, but is inexpensive and according to users, very effective.

Although there is no scientific proof that detox diets are effective, users swear by them and continue to use them for a myriad of problems to this day.  Should you try it?  Only you can answer that, but understand that it will be a tough jouney!
